Puerto Rico Whale Watching

Whale Watching

Whale watching in Puerto Rico is at its peak from January to March. This is their breeding season and lucky wale watchers can see them breeding during the winter months from Puerto Rico’s Rincon Lighthouse Park or from whale watching expeditions.

The humpback whales pass through Puerto Rico while migrating to the cooler water in the Atlantic for the summer months. They prefer shallow waters when not migrating. They live and breed in worm waters and feed in cold water. These whales grow to over 50 feet in length and 50 tons. The average whale weighs 430 pounds. These whales have huge flippers, frequently with barnacles growing on them. They are the largest flipper of any whale and can be up to one third of their body size.

These whales are a baleen whale. They eat about 5000 pounds of crustaceans, fish, and plankton each day during their 120 day feeding season.

Watching and listening to these gentle creatures is a treat. They are known for their singing ability. They sing to attract their mates during mating season and to warn other whales.
